GB Climbing athlete Will Bosi and the other big names from the world of competition climbing that missed out in Hachioji are greatly anticipating the IFSC Combined Qualifier in Toulouse which starts Thursday 29 November for their second chance to qualify for selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
There’s still hope for Olympic dreamers as 44 of climbing’s top athletes are ready to give it their all once again to vie for one of the much-coveted Tokyo 2020 quota places at the Espace Sportif des Quefets in Tournefeuille, France outside of Toulouse.
Starting tomorrow, male athletes will compete in all three competition climbing disciplines’ qualification rounds over the day, with the women’s qualifications scheduled for Friday. The finals in all three disciplines also take course over a full day, with the men’s finals on Saturday and the women’s on Sunday. This means each gender has a full rest day between qualifiers and finals, if they make it through.
After this mammoth four-day event, six more athletes per gender will have earned a quota place in addition to the eight male and eight female athletes that earned their quota place following the last Olympic Qualifying Event in Hachioji.
Who’s competing at the Olympic Qualifying Event in Toulouse?
Most of the world’s eyes may well be fixed on arguably the world’s best climber – Adam Ondra. In the Lead round of the Combined Qualification Event in Hachioji, Ondra appeared to inadvertently stand on a bolt and his score was reduced to 10, scuppering his chance to qualify for Combined Finals. There’s no doubt that Ondra will be looking for redemption this weekend in Toulouse.
However, we’ll only have eyes for our very own star of GB Climbing, Will Bosi, who has a second chance of securing his Olympic dreams. Will performed brilliantly in Hachioji coming 25th in the overall rankings and just missing out on a place in the qualification round of the Combined Event. In the individual disciplines will placed 17th in Lead, 41st in Bouldering and 40th in Speed.
Since then, Will came 9th in the European Championships in Edinburgh, again just missing out on a place in finals, and he remains the holder of the British Speed Climbing Record – meaning he’s got a great chance at making the final this weekend in Toulouse.
