This morning, representatives from the Ramblers Association (RA), Vixen Tor Action Group (VTAG) and the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) handed in four Rights of Way Claims to Devon County Council Planning Department requesting public access be granted to Vixen Tor.
These Rights of Way claims were supported by evidence including written statements from members of the public asserting that four footpaths leading to the Tor were regularly and well used before access was barred by a local landowner in 2003.
Since then, the landowner has refused a grant from the National Park Authority to voluntarily allow access and has continued to block public access by surrounding it with barbed wire and erecting keep out signs. It is private land, but its previous owner allowed the public access for more than 30 years.
However, the Ramblers’ Association and British Mountaineering Council have worked with local people to collect a substantial body of evidence spanning some 20 years that shows how Vixen Tor was a popular walking and tourist destination before being enclosed.
On Sunday 27th April, 8 walks have been arranged around the Tor, by the RA, meeting at 10.15am in Pork Hill car park. It is planned that all of these walks will finish around the Tor enclosure.
