The BMC is delighted at news that walkers and climbers could soon gain access to Vixen Tor - the well known Dartmoor landmark - thanks to a decision by Devon County Council.
In April 2008, the BMC and the Ramblers Association submitted evidence showing that footpaths to the Tor were regularly used before access was stopped by the landowner in 2003.
On the weight of the evidence, Devon County Council has agreed to make a Definitive Map Modification Order, so it is likely that there will be a Public Right of Way to and from the Tor. The landowner, Mrs Alford, may appeal.
Footpath law provides the right of passage only, so how this will relate to climbing remains to be seen, but at least people will have the right to enter the area along the footpaths.
Guy Keating, BMC Access & Conservation Officer, said: “This is a major step in the right direction for all the climbers, walkers and local residents who previously enjoyed visiting 'the sphinx of Dartmoor'. The BMC access team has been campaigning hard for a restoration of access since a public inquiry in 2003 decided the site did not qualify for an Open Access designation. This latest result is very positive indeed and we hope the Tor will soon be accessible once more.”
