Following a fatal accident involving a rented via ferrata set, Edelrid have issued a precautionary recall of a number of via ferrata sets. Testing has found that with intensive usage the performance of the recalled sets may not meet the relevant safety standards.
Edelrid recently made the following statement:
"I am contacting you today to make you aware of a precautionary product recall of EDELRID Via Ferrata sets following a fatal accident on 5 August 2012. This recall effects the following models manufactured during the seasons 2010, 2011, 2012:
Cable Lite
Cable Comfort
Brenta Comfort
Cable Lite 2.0
Cable Comfort 2.0
Cable Kit 4.0
Xtra-Light Schuster
It has been found that, in certain cases the webbing of the elasticated webbing branches, after increased use, may no longer meet the relevant safety standards. Thus the protective requirements of a Via Ferrata Set are no longer met or can only be met in part, which in the case of a fall could result in serious injury or death.
With this in mind we are advising all end users to DISCONTINUE USE OF THESE SETS IMMEDIATELY.
The attached press information gives a brief overview of the situation, and we are advising all parties to visit: http://www.edelrid.de/en/recall/ to obtain further information as to the effected sets and details of the returns procedure.
The safety of it's customers is of the utmost concern to EDELRID - a safe and efficient method of managing this issue has been developed in conjunction with independent experts in Germany and is being implemented immediately to prevent any further issues.
EDELRID have also set up a service team to handle this recall who can be contacted on:
