Update on Athlete Health Policy: Growth Plate Fractures information and IFSC RED-S processes.

Posted by Team BMC on 21/02/2024

Since the recent publication of the BMC Athlete Health Policy, we are pleased to announce some important updates.

The Growth Plate Fracture information sheet concerning growth plate fractures included in the policy has been revised and improved, thanks to the invaluable contributions of world-leading experts in the field: Dr. Volker Schöffl, Paul Houghoughi (Physiotherapist), and Dr. Gareth Jones.

This updated information sheet, now available here and on the GB Climbing resource page, provides comprehensive guidance on understanding, preventing, and managing growth plate fractures in athletes. We are immensely grateful to the esteemed experts for their expertise and insights, which have significantly enhanced this resource.

As part of our ongoing action plan, we are committed to furthering education on athlete health and injury prevention. Over the course of the year, we will develop educational materials for athletes, parents, and home coaches, ensuring that they are equipped with the knowledge and tools to support athlete health and performance.

In addition to addressing growth plate fractures, we are also actively updating the Athlete Health Policy in response to the latest developments from the international federation. Following the recent publication of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) updated process to mitigate Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) in athletes competing in international competition, we are revising our policy accordingly.

The BMC Athlete Health Policy will be updated to reflect these new requirements once we have developed the internal processes necessary to implement them effectively. This preparation is crucial as we anticipate the confirmation of the selected GB Team for the 2024 season.

We remain dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of our athletes and look forward to implementing these updates to our athlete health policies in the coming months.
