This training event, for those experienced club members who work with novices, will hopefully return in 2023.
Following on from the popular How to Train Novice Members in your Club weekends we are offering a weekend to help leaders and trainers move to the next stage by assisting them to deliver more advanced skills in scrambling and rock climbing.
Many clubs offer training sessions with experienced club members instructing or leading novice or less experienced members. This may be on a formal basis at specific training meets or informally at any club meet, and whilst it is not necessary for club members to hold any formal qualifications in order to deliver training to other members within their club, some may wish to be better informed on current good practice.
This course is for those members who have previously attended a How to Train Novice Members in your Club weekend and wish to develop their skills in supporting other, less experienced, club members in more advanced scrambling, in sea-cliff climbing and in multi-pitch climbing.
There will be some classroom-based sessions, but the majority of the weekend will consist of practical sessions out on the hills and crags.
Taking place over the weekend of TBC, this weekend will be running alongside the long-standing How to Train Novice Members in your Club course. Why not bring someone else from your club with you to attend the other course?
The self-catering bunkhouse on the main Plas y Brenin site will be your base for the weekend, or you can chose to book bed & breakfast accommodation in an en-suite room in the main house direct with Plas y Brenin.
The course fee includes your bunkhouse accommodation for both nights, a three-course meal on the Saturday evening, all group kit, transport to the practical sessions venues and all instruction.
When booking your place you will need to choose which practical sessions you wish to participate in. The choices are:
Saturday: Rock climbing, & Sunday: Multi-pitch rock climbing
Saturday: Rock climbing, & Sunday: Sea-cliff rock climbing
Saturday: Scrambling, & Sunday: Scrambling
The course will start, in a classroom, on the Saturday morning.
Content
The content of the practical sessions will be tailored to the needs of the participants, but you can expect it to cover how to assess whether an individual is ready to progress to more advanced skills, planning the training, safety considerations, suitability of locations.
Those chosing climbing will look in more detail at skills including the differences in taking people climbing versus teaching peopl, climbing in series and climbing in parallel, protecting an abseil, and escaping a route / getting off the crag.
Those chosing scrambling will lookin more detail at skills including the step from emergency rope work to planned rope work, using helmets and harnesses, working in pairs, and lead climbing versus short roping.
The practical sessions will all be delivered by highly trained and experienced instructors from Plas y Brenin.
