Remembering former BMC President Tony Moulam.
It is with great sadness that the BMC announces the passing of former BMC President Tony Moulam on Friday 29 October 2021. Tony will be fondly remembered for his mountainous contribution to the climbing community, at Manchester University, in the Climbers' Club and in the Oread MC. He was particularly known for his climbing in Derbyshire and North Wales and was a prolific writer of articles and guidebooks. Aside from bagging many a new route, he also served as the Climbers’ Club President from 1969 to 1972.
Tony became BMC President in 1970 at a critical point in the BMC’s evolution and was a key leader in the negotiations with the Central Council of Physical Recreation as it took an interest in the BMC. The excerpt from the article starts off describing the BMC presidency:
“The position had been vacant for a year because of the illness of Basil Goodfellow, the incumbent and although Frank Solari, the Vice President, had stood in ably it was felt that the BMC post should be filled urgently because key negotiations with the Central Council of Physical Recreation about funding a National Officer were imminent. Jack Longland therefore made an approach, and persuaded me to take on this additional role. … Peter Ledeboer of the ABMSAC, who was the (also recently appointed) BMC Secretary and I initially managed to persuade our CCPR liaison officer … that climbing was different from most other sports in that it could not profit from payments to enter competitions and so all costs had to be covered by membership fees. This argument was finally accepted by the CCPR and … they would, exceptionally, fund fully our National Officer!”
Tony in his novice days of mountaineering as just an 18-year-old.
A convivial guest speaker of numerous annual club dinners, Tony continued writing for club journals until shortly before his death.
Tony’s writings are being gathered for publication as a whole body of work by his daughter, Clare Westrop, and when finished will be a fitting tribute to him. For more information on this project, please contact: Stuart Firth,
