This Girl Can: climb

Posted by Tina Gardner on 17/12/2015

Get the adrenaline buzz... Keep fit without feeling like you're doing exercise... Socialise and build strong friendships. Tempted to give climbing a go? What's stopping you? Let's bust those myths girl!

Anyone can climb

Yes, climbing can be enjoyed by anyone. You don't have to be really strong - it is technique that matters not brute strength and the more you climb the more you'll improve both your strength and technique.

‘Whenever I take a newer climber to the wall they always believe that they need shocking amounts of upper limb strength, and I’m like fair enough if you believe that but I’m doing a climb one and a half handed and if I needed all that upper limb strength I wouldn’t be doing this sport.’ - Anoushé

Even if you're scared of heights

A healthy fear of heights is natural and you may well surprise yourself. You'll get an amazing sense of achievement from overcoming your fears and we fear you may get hooked!

You'll meet loads of people to climb with

Climbing walls are very sociable places. Book yourself onto a course, you'll meet plenty of people that way. Or try out a ladies night to make friends and find climbing partners.

Worried you'll be naff and everyone will be watching you?

Don't worry, the guys and girls climbing next to you will no doubt be too busy focusing on their next move, wondering what to have for tea or pondering their next Facebook post.

Find a climbing wall near you

Can't find the time to climb? There are around 400 public climbing walls in the UK so there's likley to be a venue near you. Climbing is a great activity to do as a family so it needn't be eating in to your precious family time because it is precious family time.

Getting started

Fancy giving climbing a go but don't know where to start?

Follow these five easy steps to starting climbing to kick off a lifetime of vertical adventures where you'll make new friends and massively expand your horizons.

A great way to start is to do a beginner or taster course at your local indoor climbing wall. Some walls have women's nights where you can go along and climb with other women, meet likeminded people and find new climbing partners.

For those of you who want to get outdoors on real rock check out our active outdoors courses or look into joining one of around 300 climbing, hill walking and mountaineering clubs nationwide. Find a club here

Maybe a photo of a more ' ordinary ' woman would fit better with the This Girl Can image?

Why? Because THIS GIRL CAN strive to be ordinary? How inspirational. This is a great campaign which I'm sure will inspire women to embrace the ways in which we are all extraordinary.

I think it's a valid point. It's great that in climbing girls can certain stereotypes... doesn't stop the climbing community can still bein very objectiying. I came to this page to share with a friend but I'm not going to because I know she will look at the images and say 'that's not who I can be, that's who pretty middle class white girls can be'... not doubting mina/shaunas prowess and they are real class acts, but a newcomer wouldn't necessarily know that.

Hi there anonymous 1) 2) and 3), I'm one of the girls in those shots and I'm definitely not white :) Anyone can climb, whatever background, origin or ability. You can only be who you choose to be. If you don't believe you can do something because you are X, Y or Z, then that belief is going to become reality.

I hope you do share the page with your friend or at least tell them that they can become the person thwy want to become with a little bit of belief, some hard work and some grit :)
