Swanage scrub clearance - volunteers needed

Boulder Ruckle

On Saturday 17 February there will be a BMC volunteer action day to clear scrub from the Boulder Ruckle area of Swanage.

The central area of Boulder Ruckle (Thunderball, Thor, Snowdrop etc.) is very hard to exit because of dense blackthorn, gorse and brambles. With funding from the Access and Conservation Trust and the Climbers' Club Colin Kirkus guidebook fund a flail cutter will clear the accessible areas of scrub.

The action day will start at 10.00am and finish at 4.30pm. We need volunteers to hand cut small bushes that the machine could not clear, and carry them to an on site shredder. Some of this work will need volunteers to be roped, please bring an old rope and your harness if you can. In addition a Durlston Country Park operator will be there with a scrub cutter, this should produce plenty of bushes to carry away.

All hand tools and gloves will be provided, as will a lunch of soup and pasties, and fish and chips and a pint after the event. Travelling and parking expenses can be re-imbursed and overnight accommodation can be arranged if you want to stay on and climb on Sunday.

If a hurricane or monsoon is forecast the event will move to Saturday 24 February and notification of the date change will go on the UKC thread on Thursday 15 February at 7pm.

You can also contact Scott Titt via the thread to let him know you are coming, and to order the meat or veggie pasty option.
