11 December was International Mountain Day! The theme for this year’s celebration focuses on mountain farming to tie in with the International Year of Family Farming 2014.
International Mountain Day, designated by the UN in 2003, provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of mountains. It's a day to celebrate mountains and highlights the opportunities and constraints in mountain developments as well as building partnerships to help bring positive change to the world’s mountains and highlands.
This year's theme raises awareness of how mountain agriculture, which is predominantly family farming, has been a model for sustainable development for centuries. It highlights how family farming in many mountain regions is undergoing rapid transformation due to population growth, economic globalisation and urbanisation.
