Want to start climbing outdoors? We’ve joined forces with climbing walls across the country to launch Rock Out: a new range of outdoor climbing courses to help you make the move outside.
Learning the skills to climb outside will open up a lifetime of adventure and fun, although making that first step can sometimes feel quite daunting. So, to help indoor climbers make the move to climbing outside, we are launching a new series of regional skills courses, available at an attractive price.
Rock Out climbing courses will be run by climbing walls, subsidised through BMC Sport England funding.
What's for me: Rock Out or Ready to Rock?
The BMC currently runs two types of indoor-outdoor courses: Ready to Rock and Rock Out.
The Ready to Rock courses look at the process of how to get started outdoors. By the end of the course you'll be a competent second with an understanding of anchor selection and belay techniques, and knowledge of what makes the outside world so different.
The Rock Out courses are aimed at 14-25 year olds wanting to get a taste of outdoor climbing and learn a few key skills at the same time.
What do the Rock Out courses cover?
Depending on the climbing wall and area, both one-day and two-day courses will be available. There will be a £20 discount for one-day courses and a £50 discount for two-day courses. Although the syllabus will vary slightly from wall to wall, Rock Out will aim to cover:
-
Where to climb in your local area
-
Using a guidebook
-
Different rock types
-
Grades (and the subtleties of climbing on real rock)
-
Basic rope skills
-
Lots of climbing!
What do I need?
No experience outdoors is required, and all climbing equipment will be provided on the day. You just need to be able to tie in to a harness and to safely belay your partner. If you have your own equipment (rock shoes, harness, helmet) then you are welcome to use them. There will be a goody bag included with each course.
