I am increasingly concerned that potentially (or actually) fatal flaws are being uncovered with almost every make and type of via ferrata set. The standard advice to date has been for people NOT to make their own (e.g. from slings and krabs, even if connected via a "screamer" to the harness). But if the ship-bought sets are so prone to failure (at worst) or recall (best), then what's the point of buying them? Surely a climber will be safer with a home-assembled set in which all the components, knots and connectors have been checked and are simple?
Could the BMC not help us by providing a simple instruction video on how to make our own VF sets, and show the pieces that need to be bought as well as those (e.g. kraps, slings or dynamic rope) that are likely to be available on many climbers' racks already?

I strongly disagree with the previous comment. If manufacturers have had difficulty producing lanyards that safely pass the current standards, having a go at making a DIY set is ludicrous. If you need a lanyard, go and buy one.
