The public inquiry to examine the proposed Longdendale bypass recommenced this week after the summer break.

Tuesday saw the presentation of the Peak District National Park Authorities (PDNPA) main objections by their barrister Mr Cannock, who detailed a robust case against the new road.

Mr Cannock’s rebuttal focused on how the proposed road was at odds with local and national transport plans and also appeared to directly contravene the twin statutory purposes of a National Park, that is ‘to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the National Parks; and to promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the Parks by the public’.

The PDNPA then presented a number of expert witnesses on transport policy, area management and recreation, landscape and ecology.
