Tom Hutton, a mid-Wales based freelance outdoor journalist, author and photographer has been elected as the new chair for BMC Cymru/Wales taking over from Mike Raine, the previous incumbent.
Following a tremendously successful term as chair of BMC Cymru/Wales, Mike Raine's term of office was completed in early December, and Tom Hutton was voted in as the new chair at the AGM.
Under Mike's leadership and astute guidance BMC Cymru has totally rejuvenated the BMC scene in Wales, with area meetings now seeing regular attendance by over 60 climbers, hill-walkers and mountaineers. Another of Mike's initiatives was the creation (along with Ray Wood the Area Secretary) of a regular newsletter, as well as setting up a BMC Cymru Facebook page and regular "Tweets" to keep all members in Wales (and further afield) informed and up to date on all BMC happenings.
Tom is the now the new man in the Wales chair, and he's based in mid-Wales.
He's a writer and photographer who specialises in mountain sports. He’s worked for most of the UK’s outdoor magazines on subjects as diverse as ski mountaineering, hill walking, mountain biking, climbing and sea kayaking; and he’s also written and illustrated a number of guidebooks including Scrambles and Easy Climbs in Snowdonia and Wales Mountain Biking. He lives in Mid Wales with his partner, fellow journalist, Steph Duits, and Labrador, Du. When he’s not working he’s usually climbing or attempting to renovate his 200-year-old farmhouse.
The next meeting of BMC Cymru/Wales is scheduled for February 8th, 2011, at the Vaynol Arms at Nant Peris, and it would be great to see a big turnout to welcome Tom and support him as he takes on the challenge of following in Mike's footsteps!
