A mum from Stretford in Manchester is to climb Snowdon to raise funds for Jamaican orphans, with support from BMC equity steering group member Fida Hussain.
Abigail Reid and 12 friends will trek approximately five miles to climb Snowdon on Saturday 7 May in aid of the Lisa's Life foundation. Abigail set up Lisa’s Life in 2006 in order to raise funds to support the education of ten orphaned siblings she met whilst on holiday in Jamaica.
Mountain Leader Fida Hussain, who is on the BMC's Equity Steering Group, has volunteered his support and will be joining the group. Fida is a Duke of Edinburgh Leader and one of his major successes has been in working with mixed gender Black Minority Ethnic (BME) groups.
Communications Manager, Abigail, said: “As a mum of two young children it was very difficult to walk away from the Williams’ children without doing something to help. The children are always so grateful and happy for the things that they receive and I think parents everywhere will appreciate how much this will mean to a child. I’d ask everyone just to think of their own kids and to contribute something, no matter how small, to our cause if they can.”
Speaking about the climb she said: "It will be challenging but with the Williams children in mind we are determined to achieve this goal. Our aim is to raise enough funds to buy school bags, school utensils, clothing and suitable gifts and to ship them all to Jamaica. I will then distribute all of the items to the children individually, which is another mission in itself!"
Fida Hussein added: "Abigail is appealing to local people and businesses to help support her in this cause. You may wish to join the group on their journey to the peak of Mount Snowdon or perhaps you’d like to pledge a cash donation. The group would like to have Lisa’s Life t-shirts for the mission so if you’re a local designer or printer and can offer your services for free please get in touch with Abigail on 07958 542 777."
