In the third of our series on more moderate climbing that can be accessed relatively easily from a base in the Chamonix Valley, local resident and Alpine Club member, Gus Morton, has produced a list of icefalls.
Largely forming in most winters, these 58 routes are mostly WI3/3+ and below, with walking approaches that vary from one minute to somewhat over one hour. Route lengths vary from single pitch to 400m.
The usual objective dangers associated with icefall climbing apply, but those routes that have a marked exposure to avalanche risk are noted with !.
Four guidebooks have been used to compile this list and route numbers are colour-coded to aid guidebook identification.
Areas include the Chamonix Valley, Bornes-Aravis, Sixt and Italy's well-known Cogne Valley.
The main purpose of the list, apart from showing the scope for moderate climbing in the area, is to indicate to climbers in which guide to find information on their chosen climb.
