The BMC has signed The Mental Health Charter for Sport and Recreation to help remove stigma and prejudice around mental health.
The Sport and Recreation Alliance are asking sporting organisations to commit to taking positive steps to address and encourage people to be open about mental health issues.
For some time now a focus group at the BMC has been looking at issues around mental health and mental well being from a number of points of view. For instance: whether people with mental health issues might face barriers to participating in hill walking, climbing or mountaineering; whether there might be any links to be made between mental well-being and any of these activities; and so on.
Additionallly, the BMC Equity Steering Group, that looks at ways of removing barriers to participation for under-represented groups, has also added Mental Health to the agenda of their meetings so they might consider such issues.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg launched the mental health in sport initiative this week encouraging National Bodies such as the BMC to sign up to the Mental Health Charter for Sport and Recreation.
