Llangattock Needs You!

Llangattock escarpment is a major but unfrequented limestone climbing venue above Crickhowell in South Wales. Local climbers and the South Wales Outdoor Providers Activities Group are organising a crag clean up on the evening of Wednesday May 22nd.

Llangattock escarpment, situated magnificently above the tranquil Usk valley, close to the town of Crickhowell has historically been the scene of a number of difficult access issues, including conflicts between recreational users and a notoriously aggressive grazier.

In recent years, a new access agreement, some really good co-operation between Brecon Beacons National Park, local activity providers and the BMC has led to a situation where access for climbing and the potential for more climbing development here is much more secure.

In recent years the BMC has provided funds towards the management of climbing at the site as well as making available bespoke climbing belay stakes for climbers to use.

The old limestone quarry contains over 250 established routes (with rumours of some very exciting new developments), almost all traditionally protected and occasionally  (often!)  offering very adventurous undertakings. Part of the quarry is also very popular with novice groups, being easily accessible and in a great setting.

In order to re-junvenate the site and to demonstrate to the National Park (who are about to produce a new management plan for the site)that climbers and outdoor providers really do care for the site, the BMC, the South Wales Outdoor Providers Activities Group and the Brecon Beacons National Park have organised a clean up of the site on the evening of Wednesday May 22nd. If you are available and want to give something back to climbing in the South Wales area then turn up with a couple of bin bags, some gloves and a lot of willing at the car park below Chwar Pant y Rhiw Map Ref SO 209153 for 18.30 'till 21.30 - even if you can only give half an hour of your time  it'll be a great opportunity to meet other climbers and see what this neglected venue has to offer.
