Lake District Winter Climbing and the Avoidance of Damage

Posted by Rob Dyer on 07/02/2014

A new guide for winter climbers has been developed by a large group of winter activists in the Lake District.

This is a great step forward for winter climbers in the Lakes and the free-to-download booklet contains a wide variety of useful information for winter warriors, including:

  • Advice on when and where to find good conditions
  • How to avoid damaging the crag and turf
  • A list of Lakes crags where there is a general consensus that winter climbing is acceptable
  • Good practice guidelines
  • Where to find topos and information for dry tooling venues
  • Plus a whole host of other useful information

This has been a great effort by those involved and will undoubtedly provide a great resource for new and existing winter climbers in the Lakes.

Thanks to the Fell and Rock Climbing Club, the Lake District National Park Authority, the National Trust and Natural England for their support on this project. Thanks should also go to the group of climbers involved who represented both sides of a contentious issue, but worked together to come up with a well thought out solution. By following the guidelines in this booklet, you will be treading lightly in one of England’s most spectacular landscapes.

Fingers crossed for a cold snap and some proper winter conditions in the Lakes now!
