Keypad locks for mountaineering club huts

Posted by Daniel Middleton on 15/12/2015

Some clubs hire out their mountain huts to other clubs, groups or individuals. One way of allowing secure but simple access without the need to post a set of keys is to install a keypad lock. This system has proven to work well, but not all keypad locks are approved for use by the BMC's hut insurance underwriters. Read on to find out which ones are approved for use.

The terms of the BMC hut insurance require locks which conform to BS3621 - this standard for key operated locks has been widely accepted by the insurance industry.  Unfortunately, modern keypad locks don't generally comply with this standard, and as they have become more widely used it has become useful to obtain a list of approved locks which are deemed sufficient by the insurance underwriters.

Approved keypad locks are:

Codelocks CL 610

Kaba Simplex 1021

Trilogy DL2700

Locks which do not conform to BS3621 or are not one of these three approved keypad locks should be referred to the insurance underwriters.
