The Kendal Mountaineering Club (KMC) is a friendly local club that was originally formed in the 1960s by a group of local climbers.
As these climbers aged or moved on the Club went through a period where a shortage of new members meant that it was no longer viable. It was then resurrected under new membership as the popularity of climbing and the facilities provided by climbing walls increased.
Since then the Club has gradually grown until now we currently have 135 members with interests in rock climbing, mountaineering, scrambling and walking as well as fell running, skiing, mountain and road cycling, kayaking etc.
We welcome anyone (over the age of 18) with an interest in mountain sports, although we can’t deny a bias towards trad climbing. All you need is a love of the mountains and blind optimism when it comes to the Cumbrian weather.
What we do:
There is a club meeting every Tuesday evening, which in the summer months is at a climbing venue in the Lake District or the neighbouring bits of Lancashire and Yorkshire. These meets always have a nominated pub in which to round off the evening but on the long summer nights we don’t always make last orders. When the days get too short for outdoor meets we retreat to the Kendal Climbing Wall, which boasts the highest indoor wall in the UK. Club members can be found there most evenings but Tuesdays and Thursdays tend to be the best time to find a climbing partner from the Club.
We hold a number of day meets as well as weekend hut meets where we go further afield, usually to Scotland or Wales. These include summer and winter meets,
There are also occasional longer trips such as alpine climbing/ walking and Via Ferrata etc.
We have an email contact list that lets members contact each other and find partners for getting out anytime. We also have a dedicated core of ‘weekday wasters’, retired, semi retired, shift workers and those ‘working from home’ so there is always a good chance of finding someone to play with.
On the social side we have a Ceilidh every January, an annual barbeque on the beach at Jack Scout Cove and a curry night on the last outdoor climbing meet of the year. As well as ad hoc post climbing wall beers.
