Aspiring mountaineers act now! Applications are still open for this summer’s Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust (JCMT) Alpine courses. But hurry, the closing date is 29 February.
Each year, the Trust offers three heavily subsidised courses for aspiring mountaineers aged 18 to 30. There are Scottish Winter Mountaineering courses based in the Cairngorms, an Alpine Preparation course based at Plas y Brenin and Alpine courses based in Chamonix.
All of the Trust’s courses are administered by Plas y Brenin, and you can book on to both of this summer’s Alpine courses on the website .
This winter saw 60 places on offer for the Trust’s Scottish winter courses. With much of January’s mountain weather characterised by strong winds, the full Scottish winter experience was on offer.
The winds and temperatures dropped for the final course, with both groups climbing Cairngorm on the first day, and further developing their ice axe and crampon skills on the second. This being the typical two-day program for the Trust’s Scottish winter courses.
Applications for next January’s JCMT Scottish Winter Mountaineering courses will open in the autumn on Plas y Brenin’s website.
The Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust was established in the memory of Jonathan Conville, who died aged 27 climbing the Matterhorn in the winter of 1979. The Trust’s aims are to encourage and assist young people to train for and pursue their love of the outdoors in the spirit of adventure, which Jonathan embraced during his life.

Testimonials from those attending this winter’s courses demonstrate the Trust’s relevance today, over 40 years since Jonathan died.
“Without the course being subsidised, I wouldn’t have had the ability to book on a winter mountaineering course. For me it ticked every box and more for what I was hoping to achieve and learn.”
“I have always wanted to get into winter mountaineering but have never had the opportunity to do so. This course has been amazing, and helped me fulfil my childhood dream of trying winter mountaineering.”
“I have learnt some invaluable skills about how to stay safe in the mountains and I am already planning my next trip up to Scotland.”
