Five Brit Climbers explore the climbing available around Tehran.
As a bilateral initiative to develop contacts between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the UK, the IR Iran Mountaineering Federation and the British Embassy in Tehran invited the BMC to take part in a mountaineering programme between 24 and 30 October 2001. Five representatives from the BMC took part in the programme coaching groups of Iranian competition climbers, competing, and presenting slide shows. Despite the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan the atmosphere was very friendly, and the hospitality superb. But this was still a climbing trip with a difference, since all female climbing activities took place behind locked doors or alone on superb boulders and crags north of Tehran. But despite dress codes, the women still manage to climb hard, kitted out in full length macks and headscarves (except when overhangs got the better of them!)
