Iran summer youth camp 2016

Posted by Nick Colton on 03/06/2016

The UIAA Youth Commission and the IMSCF (Iran Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation) announce that the 2016 Iran Youth Summer Camp will take place on Mount Sabalan (4,811m). This follows the successful Mount Damavand event in 2015.

The meet will be open to all climbers and especially young climbers aged 16 to 32 - although those under 18 will need to be accompanied by a suitably qualified person.

For anyone with an adventurous spirit, this is a unique opportunity to visit Iran.

The meet itself will focus on climbing Mount Sabalan but there are also other options available for those who looking for something extra.

Mount Sabalan itself is an inactive stratovolcano in the Alborz mountain range of Ardabil Province, northwestern Iran and is the country's third highest peak. On the slopes of the mountain the mineral water from springs attracts large numbers of tourists each year, many of whom have faith in healing properties attributed to the springs.

The nomadic people of the area live in small villages, with their round "Yurt" tents appealing to tourism. Sabalan has a sky resort (Alvares) and different tourist areas such as the Sarein spa. The mountain is known for its beautiful vistas, including the Shirvan gorge.

The aims of the event are as follows:

  • To climb a 4000m peak
  • To allow climbers to climb different routes up the peak depending on route choice.
  • To offer young people the opportunity to learn ice climbing techniques from a basic level upwards.
  • To give climbers, epecially young climbers, an opportunity to visit Iran and meet other climbers in a friendly atmosphere.
  • To faciltate cultural exchange between young climbers

The event is open all climbers of any age but especially to young people aged 16 to 32 - although if under 18 they must accompanied by a suitably qualified person.

The event starts on 23 August in Tehran.

We don't know yet. It will be up to the Iran Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation. If they do decide to run it again they will send us the information and BMC will put it on the website in the usual way.
