In the month before the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (March 4-6), ShAFF is holding a series of four expert lectures on the Peak District’s adventure sports at the Showroom cinema.
The series kicks off on Friday 28 January with a talk by Sheffield climber, Ian Parnell.
Organiser Matt Heason says: “In Sheffield some of the best adventure sports are on your doorstep. We want to entertain and inspire people by showing them what’s on offer in and around the city. We’re kicking off with acclaimed mountaineer Ian Parnell. Ian’s climbed with the best – including Everest with Sir Ranulph Fiennes. With some of the world’s best gritstone climbing and world-class indoor climbing it’s no surprise that he lives in Millhouses.”
“All the events are hosted in the comfort of Sheffield’s independent art-deco cinema café/bar, The Showroom. And there’s a chance to win amazing prizes on offer including Arc’teryx outdoor kit, Petzl torches, Accelerate running kit and Silva bike lights.”
The schedule is as follows:
-
Friday 28 Jan - Climbing Expert Night - Ian Parnell - prizes from Arc'teryx
-
Friday 4 Feb - Caving Expert Night - Robbie Shone - prizes from Hitch N Hike - 3 Petzl head torches
-
Friday 11 Feb - Running Expert Night - Accelerate - prizes from Accelerate
-
Friday 18 Feb - Biking Expert Night - Nick Craig - prizes from Silva
Each event starts at 8pm and lasts about 2 hours. Tickets are £7.60 (concessions available). For more information see the ShAFF website or call the Showroom box office on 0114 275 7727.
In the run-up there’s also another chance to catch up on last year’s winners in The Best of ShAFF 2010 screening on Monday 7 February including The Asgard Project - Leo Houlding & crew’s stunning climb and base jump off Mount Asgard on Baffin Island.
There's also the ShAFF trailer to get you in the mood.
On the weekend of ShAFF itself, there’s a cracking line-up for climbers and mountaineers with 3 screenings including: Alistair Lee’s Kendal Grand Prize winning film of Leo Houlding’s first ascent of The Prophet; Ueli Steck’s alpine speed-climb of the Eiger; and in First-Ascent – The Brothers Wild, Timmy O'Neill and his brother Sean – who is paralysed from the waist down – tackle El Cap and Alaska’s Ruth Gorge.
