BMC at ShAFF 2023: Adventure Film Workshops and Screening

Sheffield Adventure Film Festival is set to bring the wild outdoors into the heart of the city as tickets go on sale for the 2023 festival, which takes place at the Showroom Cinema from 3-5 March. We've got a full programme of Women in Adventure events taking place and the premiere of Steve McClure's new film La Bavarese. See what's on.

ShAFF always has a focus on sustainable adventuring, find out how to repair your outdoor kit, exchange unwanted gear at the Alpkit kit swap and drop off old kit for upcycling. Events and talks are free to attend, but please register your place to  manage numbers.

BMC Women in Adventure Screening

Saturday 4th March 14.30 – 15.45 | Showroom Cinema, Sheffield

This year join the BMC and Montane to screen the shortlisted films entered into the 2022 Women in Adventure film competition. Hosts Em Lyons and Molly Thompson-Smith will speak to some of the stars and filmmakers of the films, and crown the winners.

BMC Women in Adventure Workshop and Networking Session

Saturday March 4th | 5-7pm | Workstation, Mezzanine | FREE SESSION

Following the Women in Adventure screening earlier on in the day, all are welcome to to attend this FREE Filming Workshop session. Aimed at anyone looking to get into filmmaking, starting out, wanting to hone their skills or do some more networking.

This session will be a rotation workshop, where you get 20 minutes with each workshop leader, before rotating round to the next workshop. The session will be followed by an opportunity to network with the people and leaders of the session. Hosted by Em Lyons.

Workshops Details:

#1 Building a Media Career in the Outdoors (the unconventional way)
Learn about the many steps you can take to go freelance - it doesn’t always have to involve film school or starting young. Run by Rachel Sarah.
 
 Rachel is a freelance outdoor filmmaker & photographer based in the UK, specialising in adventure sport and environmental stories. She now works on short films and documentaries about stories with meaning, the kind of stories that do not get told enough in the adventure world. She works with brands on campaigns, with some of her most recent work being with Jack Wolfskin, Global Cycling Network and The Women’s Trad Festival. Rachel won the Best Film Award in 2020 in the BMC Women in Adventure Film Competition with her film Uncomfortable
 
 
#2 Filming adventurous activities: wild swimming, mountain biking, climbing
Get some top tips on how put a film together when it involves being outside and film adventurous activities. Just starting to dip your toes into filmmaking, curious or want to ask and share some advice this will be a great workshop to attend. Run by Roxy Barry
 
 
Roxy is a freelance photographer and filmmaker based in the Scotland, usually working on something outdoorsy that showcases the diverse faces and voices that make up our outdoor community. At the heart of her work are events centred on accessibility and diversity. She has worked at a variety of events and on a bunch of awesome projects, including directing and producing the Womens Trad Fest film. 
 
 
 
#3 What makes the difference between a good and a great film
Anna will run through the judging and selection criteria used at ShAFF and how films are chosen for the festival. Run by Anna Paxton
 
Anna is the Co-Director of ShAFF and a film producer & author, working freelance across a variety of roles in the outdoor industry. As Producer at Salt Street she made a 6-part viral mini-series for BBC Sport in 2019, produced the video content for The Outdoor City and Visit Britain’s international Adventure Breaks campaign in 2018, and spent most of 2017 producing a 6-part urban sports series for Channel 4.
 
 
 
 
#4 Putting the passion and the personal into your storytelling
Learn about the importance of story telling and how to make great stories and characters come across well on screen. Run by Hannah Maia
 
Hannah Maia is an award winning filmmaker based in the Lake District, where she works creatively under the name Maia Media. Hannah completed an MA in Visual Anthropology and Ethnographic Filmmaking in the same year GoPro launched their first digital camera.  Unsure what to do with her life but with a GoPro in hand Hannah began to tell stories and make films about her own adventures. Along the way she's worked with some memorable clients including Air France, Visit Wales, Ellis Brigham and Refugee Youth. She also has a short film screening this year called 'Chilly Dipper'.

Steve McClure's brand new film 'La Bavarese' will be shown for the first time at ShAFF this year. Plus you can also catch the 15 minute film 'British Bouldering Champs 22' in the ShAFF Climb Sessions.

Come and watch Moors For The Future's new film "Working Together" and find out more about current work and future plans and how you can get involved through the BMC’s Climate Project or 1% for the Planet.
