How to take a compass bearing

Posted by Carey Davies on 29/07/2015

Taking a compass bearing can be fiddly at first but is easy once you get the hang of it. Chris Townsend explains how to do it in this BMC TV video.

If you're just starting getting out into the hills, learning how to take a compass bearing is one of the most important skills to get to grips with.

Even in the age of GPS, knowing how to use a compass in conjunction with a map is still a vital skill, as this video explains.

One of the world’s most respected experts on long-distance walking and backpacking, Chris Townsend talks us through how to do it.

Chris is also the BMC’s first hill walking ambassador.
