Horseshoe Quarry's 'Star Trek Wall' gets a facelift thanks to AMI volunteers

AMI volunteers working hard to re-equip Star Trek Wall - a short wall popular with beginners and instructed groups opposite Main Wall

A group of volunteers from the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) recently spent a weekend carrying out work to replace the old bolts on Star Trek Wall, a short but popular wall with beginners and groups at Horseshoe Quarry, above the ramp overlooking Main Wall.

The work was carried out by AMI volunteers who were learning how to bolt as part of their continued professional development, taught and overseen by Dan Robinson, who runs the Cumbria Bolt Fund when not working as an instructor in the Lakes. Over the course of two days, all AMI members who attended learnt and put into practice the skills needed to carry out essential bolting work in their local areas, adding to the relatively small pool of people across the country who do this essential work.

Above: AMI volunteers working across two days to replace old bolts on Star Trek Wall with new high quality stainless steel, resin 'p' bolts.

All routes on the wall were re-bolted with new stainless steel resin bolts, which should last for many years to come. Unfortunately, two routes - Saturn’s Ring and Torchwood - were found to have significant unstable rock, so were stripped of their existing bolts and not re-equipped.

A huge thanks goes out to all the volunteers who took part in this weekend, the AMI Peak Area for organising it and Dan Robinson and the Cumbria Bolt Fund for passing on the essential knowledge needed for attendees to carry this work out safely here, and elsewhere in the future.
