This spring Mountain Training launch their Hill & Mountain Skills courses, the perfect way to receive top training for those days in the hills.
Who’s it for?
Anyone aged 14 or over. Hill Skills is for beginner hill walkers and Mountain Skills is for those with some experience of countryside walking. If you’d like to walk more often but can’t read a map or are too scared to venture onto steeper terrain, these courses are for you.
What’s it all about?
Hill Skills: A practical understanding of how to plan walks, become familiar with the use of a map and learn about the equipment required. You will also gain an understanding of the effects of weather, how to deal with emergencies a valuable insight into the upland environment.
Mountain Skills: Skills in map and compass, mountain weather forecasting, movement through steep ground, planning and preparation, emergency procedures, seasonal effects and the mountain environment are all part of the syllabus.
The scheme has been designed to teach novices about the hill or mountain environment and how to enjoy it in their own time.
How does it work?
From 1 April, register for the scheme on Mountain Training's website and receive a copy of the BMC's Safety on Mountains book. You can book on a course from 1 April when the scheme is launched.
It’s that simple. And once you’ve registered, you can attend either or both courses.
The Hill Skills course can also be used as a stepping stone to the new Lowland Leader award which is being launched on 1st April.
Where is it useful?
It has been designed for use anywhere in the UK and Ireland depending on which course you attend.
Why?
Because the freedom and independence that comes with knowing how to look after yourself in the hills and mountains is priceless.
