Gri Gri Failures

Posted by BMC on 02/05/2001

A new report to emphasise the need for care.

The Equipment Investigation Panel has been looking into two incidents where it appeared that a Gri Gri failed to arrest a fall. Extensive testing has now been carried out both by Petzl and EIP members (with the help of Plas y Brenin staff). Initial results suggest no technical fault with the Gri Gri but did highlight circumstances under which the device might not hold a fall.

A full report will appear soon (check the BMC website) but the bottom line is the same as before -the Gri Gri is an excellent device but it is not fail-safe and it is not a “hands off” device - so take care to use it as outlined in the instructions. As a result of these incidents the BMC and Petzl will be working together to improve and widen the advice available.
