The European rounds of the UIAA Ice World Cup start this weekend in Saas Fee, Switzerland. Three senior and two junior GB Ice climbers plan to compete in the remaining events of the season.
The GB Ice Climbing Team decided to focus its efforts on the European legs of the UIAA 2017 Ice Climbing World Tour series this year, and the first event in Saas Fee starts this weekend in the classic venue of an underground car park with the ice wall climbing up the centre of the car park in the centre of town.
UIAA Ice World Cup Series
GB Ice climbers Anna Wells, Tom Ballard and Will Woodhead will compete at the next three events in the series:-
20-21 January - Saas Fee, Switzerland - Full programme here
28-29 January - Rabenstein, Italy - Full programme here
4-5 February - Champagny-en-Vanoise, France - World Championships
Anna, Tom and Will competed on the 2016 IWC tour and finished 19th, 37th and 60th respectively overall. Hopefully their experience from last season will see them climb up the rankings this year.
UIAA Ice World Youth Championships
10-11 February - Champagny-en-Vanoise, France - World Youth Championships - Full programme here
There will be two GB Junior Ice climbers competing at the World Youth Championships in France - Emma Powell and Adam Willison. Both of these young climbers have been regularly beating senior competitors at the 2016 British Tooling Series outright and both won the British Tooling Series overall, so we have high hopes for some good results from these guys.
Last year Emma finished in a fantastic 3rd place in the World Youth Championships in the under 19 category despite having only just turned 16. Adam finished in a respectable 15th in the same category.
The GB Ice climbers have been selected to compete at the UIAA Ice World Cup events based on the GB Ice Climbing Team selection criteria which can be viewed here.
All the events will be broadcast live on the internet and the livestream can be viewed here.
The GB Ice Climbing Team is supported by the BMC and Berghaus
