It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to BMC Patron Lord Tony Greaves, one of the our staunchest advocates and a huge loss to not only the BMC but the whole outdoor community.
Tony (Lord) Greaves died aged 78 on Tuesday 23 March at his home in Trawden, Lancashire. Having had a great positive influence on the development and evolution of hill walking and climbing access rights in the nation, his passing leaves the BMC and the outdoor community vastly poorer than before.
A lifelong climber and hill walker, Tony first got involved with the BMC in the late 1990s and was instrumental in securing the passage of the Countryside and Rights of Way Bill through Parliament. As a Lib Dem peer in the House of Lords, Tony was a great advocate for the rights of climbers and walkers and improving access to the countryside and he spoke with passion and authority on the subject many times.
Tony was also a founding member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Mountaineering and became a Patron of the BMC in 2011; one of his more recent notable contributions was to chair a well-attended open debate in Manchester on some major proposed changes to the BMC’s constitution in advance of an important vote at the 2018 AGM.
The BMC extends its sincerest condolences to Tony’s family and would once again like to express its infinite gratitude for his great support over the years.
