The lease for the Eastern Moors Estate was signed on 24th January 2011, with the National Trust and RSPB coming together to form the 'Eastern Moors Partnership' to manage the estate for the next 15 years.
This is the first partnership of its type between the National Trust and RSPB, bringing together the expertise of the two largest organisations of their type in Europe to manage a site that is hugely important for climbers and walkers. This partnership has come about as a result of the Peak District National Park (PDNPA) asset review which is looking to sell or lease a number of sites currently owned by the Authority. The Eastern Moors Estate covers a number of popular and high quality crags such as Froggatt, Curbar and Birchen Edge as well as stunning walks along the edges and across the moors.
Prior to the lease being signed, a number of public consultation and stakeholder engagement events were run in the area to establish what was important to users of the site and to highlight areas for improvement. The BMC fed into this process along with many individual climbers and walkers and the Partnership’s plans for the estate appear to be very positive so far, with a strong ethos of recreation and conservation working together. Elsewhere in the National Park, the PDNPA asset review is ongoing, with other areas currently being considered for sale/lease including the Roaches and North Lees Estates. As with the Eastern Moors, the BMC is feeding into the process, ensuring that climbers and walkers have a voice in the objectives being set for new owners/tenants at these internationally important sites for recreation and nature interests.
