Cwmaman Bolt Workshop

Nestled in the beautiful Cynon Valley in South Wales, Cwmaman is a small sandstone quarried crag. I met up with local volunteers and the South Wales Bolt Fund last weekend. What happened?

First of all, it was blazing hot. Luckily I'd brought the official BMC tea making equipment with me, so all the volunteers were at least kept fed and watered. I'd heard dark rumours regarding these S.Wales valleys, but was pleasantly suprised both by the crag and by the stunning views and outlook.

Whilst the bolt fund team cracked on with re-equiping routes, I did a quick run through with the other volunteers on the latest knowledge when it comes to bolting. As the sun beat down, we all set to jugging up fixed ropes, cleaning routes and fixing anchors. By the end of a tiring but rewarding day, a large portion of the crag had been blitzed.

Safety alert for Fixe lower-offs: updated

The DAV (German Alpine Club) have issued a safety alert for lower-off units from manufacturer Fixe, some of which have been reported to fail by cracking of one of the chain links. These units are primarily designed for use at indoor walls, but are also sometimes installed outside with the hangers mounted onto expansion bolts to provide an outdoor lower-off.

Bolt corrosion warning from the UIAA

As a sport climber do you assume that all bolts are bomb-proof? Well, maybe it's time to think again. The UIAA have issued a warning through the Safety Commission, which is an important read for anyone who sport climbs or equips bolted routes, especially in warm coastal climates.
