With 2020 a big year for Sport Climbing, the BMC National competitions kicked off with a bang with the Welsh Bouldering Championships at The Climbing Hangar Swansea!
New to the calendar this year, climbers from all over the country and our friends from Ireland made their way to newly opened TCH Swansea to battle it out over a superb set of boulders to find out who would be crowned Welsh Bouldering Champion 2020.
With 141 competitors registered for the event, it was down to the highly skilled setting team to provide suitable challenges for all levels of climber.
The setting team was led by chief route setter Max Ayrton (ex-GB Senior team), Dave Barrans (GB Senior Team), James Garden (ex-GB Senior Team) and Alex Mason-Powell (Welsh Legend). Providing challenges across the entire centre, they succeeded in testing the skills of the competitors with technical aretes and steep roof climbing, managing to completely split the field.
The top six in each category proceeded to the finals, which saw Youth A and Junior Males get reacquainted with splendid slabs, Youth A and Junior females with slippy slopers and Youth B and C delighting in a mixture of the above including some miniscule crimps.
We head to Sheffield next for the Youth Open Lead and Paraclimbing championships on 22 & 23 February. Register here .
