The BMC is deeply saddened to report the death of Craig Harwood, who was killed in a leader fall whilst climbing at Compass Point in Cornwall on 4 September.

Craig was the current chair of the BMC Huts Committee, and a regular volunteer on our International Meets. He was also a longstanding official of the Climbers’ Club (CC) and a member of the Fell & Rock Climbing Club.

He joined the CC in 1993, and served on the HMSC (Huts Management Sub Committee) for eight years between 1995 and 2003, as well as serving on the main committee between 1999 and 2003. Craig was the main architect for the redesign and major improvements to the Count House at Bosigran, and the purchase and conversion of Riasg in Roybridge; he was also involved in many improvements made to Ynys Ettws in the Llanberis Pass over the years.

Craig was also a super-keen fell runner, specialising in ultra-distance challenges and mountain marathons. He was a member of Macclesfield Harriers, serving on the committee as Fell Representative and then as Chairman, and making a massive contribution to the ongoing management and development of the club.

A passionate climber, runner, mountain biker and natural born enthusiast, Craig was a rare character in the most positive of ways; he was selfless and always giving to others. The outdoor community has lost a gem. He will be sorely missed and our condolences are with his family and friends.

Book of Condolence

Mark Hartell has set up a "book of condolence" for anyone who would like to contribute a story, a picture or a thought. You can email Mark at hartellmark@gmail.com

Funeral arrangements

The funeral will take place on Tuesday 23 September at 2.15pm at the Unitarian Chapel, King Edward Street, Macclesfield SK10 1AB (then close family only to the crematorium for the committal).

This will be followed by a gathering at the Masonic Hall, Riseley Street, Macclesfield SK10 1BW to which everyone is welcome.

Family flowers only. Donations to the Cornwall Air Ambulance who did everything they could to save Craig. No dress code - Janet (his partner) has asked people to come as who they are.

Parking is available at the Masonic Hall (5-10 minute walk in almost a straight line and they are happy for people to park there on the day) or at Whalley Hayes car park, Westminster Street/King Edward Street SK10 1BS (free after 3pm). Here's a map:
