BMC Peak Youth Climbing Meet 2018

Posted by James McHaffie on 06/12/2017

Join one of the BMC and DMM's youth climbing meets in 2018, a weekend of classic climbs, good socials, and an evening lecture on the Saturday night. The first one for 2018 will be based at Froggatt in the Peak District on 14-15 April.

The BMC and DMM are teaming up to give youngsters the opportunity to take the step from indoor to out, with the first one being organised at the Climbers' Club hut, The Downes Hut, located just beneath the excellent gritstone edge, Froggatt.

Organised for young climbers (11-17-years-old), wanting to make the step from indoor walls to getting outside on the crags, as well as those who already have some outdoor climbing experience, it is a great opportunity to enjoy some classic trad routes under the watchful eye of experienced climbers.

Overseen by the BMC youth and partnerships officer, James McHaffie, the meet is ideal for young climbers with suitable basic knowledge through to those that are more experienced; as there are limited places, if you're interested get signed up now.

A group of volunteer experienced climbers will be gathered together (minimum of five years climbing experience), who are known to the organisers and have been DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked (BMC do this free for volunteers). These experienced climbers will take the youngsters out onto the crags after taking account of their ability, aspirations and the weather.

If you would like to volunteer at the event please email James McHaffie: james@thebmc.co.uk.

People can arrive from 19.30 hrs on the Friday evening and meet up with their climbing partners for the weekend. On Saturday morning, James will offer a short belay workshop before people head off to the cliffs.

Food will be supplied on the Saturday night and an evening talk will be given by a well-known mystery guest climber. Youths and volunteers will need to supply their own breakfast and lunch for both days.

Sunday will involve more cragging with everyone expected back by 16.00 hrs to be picked up by parents or guardians soon after.

The meet will cost £20 which goes towards the two-nights’ accommodation and the food on the Saturday night.
