As we embark on a new year, here's a brief look back at some of the BMC's new achievements of 2010. Membership continued to grow many new projects were initiated.
In addition to continuing our main work programmes, some highlights and new initiatives include:
Membership
• Membership increased to nearly 74,000 at year end 2010
• Over two thirds of individual members now on direct debit; switched to electronic membership reminders
• c.60,000 visits/month to BMC website; monthly email newsletter to 60,000+ members
• Over 3,500 Facebook fans and 1,500 Twitter followers
• Two major questionnaire surveys undertaken - membership and climbing wall user
• Membership database and website re-design in progress
New Events held in 2010
• Upland Environment Conference, Losehill Hall (March)
• International Sea Cliff Climbing Meet, Lands End (May)
• Bespoke hill walking/navigation courses for BMC members at Plas y Brenin (May)
• World Youth Championships, Ratho (Sept)
• Outdoor engagement day with the Asian community, Manchester (Sept)
• Climbing Injury Conference, Sheffield (Nov)
• c.30 Learning to Train workshops, Nationwide (Mar - Nov)
New Products & Publications
• NEW British Mountain Maps: Dartmoor, Snowdonia South and Southern Highlands
• Helmet guide (online) produced by the BMC Technical Committee (April)
• Froggatt to Black Rocks guidebook published (May)
• NEW edition of Safety on Mountains handbook (Nov)
Access, Conservation, Environment
• Access & Conservation Officer for Wales completed first year – progress on many ‘problem’ sites in Wales
• Changes to the Access & Conservation Trust (ACT) – to be re-launched in 2011
• Coastal Access campaigning continues
• Focus on BMC owned and managed land through our Land Management Group (LMG)
• Secured access at Fairy Caves Quarry, Llanymynech, and South Gower.
Work programmes
• Awarded a ‘Green Light’ from Sport England for progress on grant targets
• Achieved Intermediate Standard for Safeguarding and Protecting Children
• Clubs Committee goes from strength to strength
• Torch Trophy Award for Les Ainsworth for 46 years of voluntary contribution
