The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) alongside the Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC) and Mountain Training are excited to announce the launch of the England Pathway Performance Hub Pilot Scheme.

The England Pathway Performance Hub scheme aims to support athletes in their development and performance by signposting to walls which facilitate high quality coaching and training environments, with the BMC working in collaboration with climbing walls around the country to foster talent at local and regional levels.  

The BMC are inviting applications from indoor climbing walls who have an interest in being part of this pilot scheme. Applications will close on Friday 7 June at 12 noon.

The main objective for England Pathway Performance Hubs is to provide facilities where best practice is facilitated through;  

• Quality coaching 
• Having the best boulders and routes set 
• Collaboration between walls and BMC/ABC/GB Climbing 
• Alignment with the BMC’s safe-guarding standards 

Key elements of the scheme and benefits to members:

• The scheme will facilitate collaboration between the BMC/ABC/GB Climbing and climbing walls around the country, especially at a local and regional level. 
• It will support athletes in their development and performance by signposting to walls that provide high quality coaching and training environments.
• It will support all aspects of competition pathway development from entry level (grassroots) to lifelong participation. 
• The scheme will enable walls to customise their own resource and development needs in partnership with the BMC/ABC and other partners. 

Initially, there will be two types of hubs: local and regional. These will be considered depending on the capacity of the wall to set a specific level of boulder of route, the type of training which can be facilitated, accessibility of the wall, and the links with the local community. 

The decision as to which walls will be involved in the pilot scheme will be made by the current advisory group and will be based on meeting strategic objectives. 

 What are we looking for?

• Venues that are keen and willing to work in a collaborative way. 
• Venues that have the capacity to engage in the process.  

A bi-monthly advisory group meeting will form the basis of the discussion and decision-making process for the project, and further meetings will be arranged with individual members as appropriate. The pilot scheme will run until the end of 2024 at which point it will be reviewed.
