If we gave out medals for such things, Steve Findlay & Libby Houston would be getting one each.
I drove down from Buxton on Sunday morning through increasingly thick mist. As I passed Stroud, things started to look up and the sun came out. By the time I was in the Avon Gorge, two things were glorious: the weather and the number of people slashing and burning on an Amazonian scale! Some of you will know how impenetrable the base of UNknown Wall had become over the last year or two, with relatively few ascents of such classics as M1 and Ladder of Desires. With the removal of most of the vegetation, the base of the wall is now clear again. Testamant to the team's work is the fact that by about 3pm, there was a team on each of those classic routes. Many thanks to Steve, Libby and the parks department of Bristol City Council, and the Downs Ranger, Gordon Millward in particular. We would also like to say a great big thank you to everyone who came along and worked so hard on the day: well done!
Keep an eye out for further events at a crag near you. If you have any crags you would like to be given 'the treatment', then get in touch with me here in the office.
