Arco Rock Junior 2009

The international children’s climbing competition that takes place at the beautiful town of Arco in the Italian Alps took place again over the weekend of June 6th and 7th and Great Britain was represented by 10 young climbers all competing in the prestigious under 14 cup.

This year the format changed and instead of separate speed and leading competitions the organisers included bouldering and had one event including all three disciplines with an overall winner. This was probably a disadvantage to the British climbers who have very little experience of speed climbing and the bouldering was also in a different format to what the British children had previously experienced. 45 minutes to complete 5 problems but with around 40 children in your category was quite a rush.

However despite the unfamiliarity there were some excellent results and fine performances. Marie Teasdale came 7th in the girls B category, Jack Graham came 10th in the Boys B category and Randy Roby came 20th and Michael Hopkins 25th in the boys A category.

All came back home ready for the BMC Youth Climbing Series Finals taking place in West Way (London) on 20th June.
