Alfred Gregory, mountaineer and photographer for the Everest 1953 expedition has died aged 96.
As official photographer for the successful British attempt on Everest in 1953, Lancashire born "Greg" as he was known, reached 27,900ft (8,500m) and took many of the best-known pictures of the Everest expedition. In 2003, on the 50th anniversary of the Everest ascent, his pictures, which reside at the Royal Geographical Society, were exhibited at the National Theatre in London.
After Everest he led mountaineering expeditions to map the Rolwaling region west of Everest and an attempt on Distaghil Sar, in the Karakoram.
