Alan Hinkes completes county 'summits'

Yorkshire mountaineer Alan Hinkes has completed his record breaking challenge to reach the highest points in each of England's 39 traditional counties in just eight days.

Alan is the only Briton to have climbed all 14 of the world’s mountains over 8000m high.  However, taking on this lower-altitude English counties challenge is something Alan had been hoping to do for some time.

Alan began his challenge by climbing the Cheviot in Northumberland on 28 August and finished in the Lake District with Helvellyn (in the old county of Westmorland) on Saturday 4 September.

Funds raised by the challenge will go the Mountain Rescue England & Wales.  Alan benefitted from the help of Mountain Rescue earlier this year when he survived an avalanche while climbing in Cumbria.

Alan said: "this challenge is about reminding people to get out there and enjoy the countryside and the hills, but to be safe and plan a bit and be prepared."

Penny Brockman from Mountain Rescue said: "Alan's dedication to mountaineering is only matched by his contribution to it. Alan has supported us for years and his numerous expeditions across the world have really helped to raise awareness of the cause."
