A celebration of the life and achievements of former BMC President Alan Blackshaw will be held from 6.30pm on Monday 26 November at Royal Marines Reserves, 351 Merton Road, Southfields, London SW18 5JX. Full details are below.

Alan, who died in August 2011, made an immense contribution to the mountaineering world.

He was President of the BMC (1973 - 1976), a BMC Patron (from 1978), and a specialist advisor to the BMC Access, Conservation and Environment Group. Amongst his many other roles, he had stints as President of the Alpine Club (2001 - 2004), and President of the UIAA (2004 - 2005). He also played a vital role in the introduction of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act in 2003.

In 1966 Alan wrote Mountaineering: from Hillwalking to Alpine Climbing, which was published by Penguin Books. Often referred to as ‘Blackshaw's Mountaineering’, it was the seminal text of its day and was regarded by many as the Bible of climbing and mountaineering.

For a fuller list of Alan’s achievements read Alan Blackshaw OBE (1933-2011)

All those who knew Alan or appreciated his work are welcome to attend the London celebration.
