Pack your boots because we're going for some fantastic hikes through the lakes and mountains in the glorious Jungfrau and Gstaad regions of Switzerland.
Three imposing mountains make for one outstanding visit. to this region. It's home to some of Europe’s most iconic mountains, namely the world-renowned Eiger as well as the Mönch and the region’s namesake, the Jungfrau.
Sitting beneath these mountains are some of the most charming high-up villages in Switzerland; the historic village of Grindelwald, the Eiger village, the car-free villages Wengen and Mürren, Lauterbrunnen - the valley of 72 waterfalls - and the lesser-known beauty of Haslital. Each village is lovely in its own way, and staying here means being out in the pure nature of Switzerland.
#1 Long-distance walks in the Jungfrau Region
Distance trekking becomes possible without much organisational effort. You can undertake a trek spanning seven days, visiting and passing through the beautiful scenery of Lake Brienz, the lush green valley of the Aare and the scenic pass trail to the Rosenlaui valley, with magnificent views of mountain giants, the glaciers and the numerous waterfalls.
#2 The Eiger Trail
The Eiger Trail starts at the vantage point above the Eigergletscher station and leads over steep alpine meadows and scree slopes along the foot of the north face, past a thundering waterfall, to the Berghaus and railway station Alpiglen. From Alpiglen, the Wengerenalpbahn takes you comfortably back to the glacier village.
Enjoy the magnificent view of the valley and the notorious Eiger north face during the entire hike.

#3 The Gelmersee Circular Hike
The hike begins with a breath-taking ride on the steepest open funicular in Europe. After the ascent the hike around the Gelmersee begins. Along the lake, original streams and huge rock slabs invite you to linger. After circumnavigating the lake, the hike continues to Kunzentännlein. To get back to the starting point you follow the old mule track. Top tip, if you’re feeling fit why not extend the hike and experience the hospitality of the Gelmerhütte.
Described by Julie Andrews as being the ‘last paradise in a crazy world’, Gstaad offers the opportunity to slow down and recharge in comfort with authentic Alpine nature and lifestyle. And once your energy levels are refreshed, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy.
Gstaad is located in the south-west of Switzerland right on the border to the French-speaking part of the country. It's easily accessed by rail or car from the regions around Lake Thun, Lake Geneva and the Gruyere region. Direct connections to the European high-speed rail network and all international airports in Switzerland guarantee a time-saving and pleasant journey as a bonus.
#4 Tour of the Alpine Herb Trail
Fragrant herbs, colourful blossoms and rippling water: the Alpine Herb Trail is a place for all the senses.
Feel a variety of varied surfaces such as wood, pebbles or even pine cones with bare feet. Walk through fresh mountain water. Strengthen your senses by smelling different herbs. Enjoy the warm rays of the sun on the sun lounger. Or simply listen to the chirping of the birds.

#5 Stroll along mountain waters
The destination Gstaad has a wealth of magnificent lakes, rivers and waterfalls each with its own distinctive character. However, all of them have one thing in common: their special atmosphere and splendid location in the heart of the magnificent natural landscape.
Don’t miss, the splendour of Lake Lauenen, the famous Saane which gave the region its name, and the ferocious Geltenschuss and Tungelschuss waterfalls.

Seeing the breathtaking Swiss landscapes by rail is all part of the holiday and is really easy to do. Just three changes on the train from London can get you to Interlaken, via Paris and Geneva . Booking in advance will get you the cheapest deals on fares.
