Another second place in Vail, Colorado at the weekend pushes Shauna Coxsey one place further up the rankings to second, hot on the heels of World Cup leader Anna Stohr and with just one event remaining.
Stohr took top spot again with Shauna close behind in what became a very tense final. Coxsey said that after her recent run of great results the pressure has been getting to her more. She only realised it was her turn to climb in the qualifiers with a minute to spare.
“The mind game is hard work but getting psyched and ready is never really an issue for me. In qualifiers I didn’t feel like myself at all so to overcome that for the semis was amazing.”
Coxsey added that semi-finals are the hardest round both physically and mentally, as the 20 top performers are whittled down to six. But Coxsey performed brilliantly to go into the final in second place. Bad weather in Colorado delayed the start but Coxsey found the problems to her liking and she topped out on the first three.
Yet a strenuous move at the top of the third problem sapped her power. “I got insanely pumped and have no idea how I managed to get it. I had very little left for the last one.” Too pumped to top out, Coxsey could only watch as Stohr became the only woman to top out on all four problems and seal the win.
There is one round left of the IFSC Boulder World Cup this year and that's in Munich in August.
The Senior British Bouldering Team is supported by Sherpa Adventure Gear and Lonsdale China.
