Young, free, single - and skint? Here’s how we can help you to carry on enjoying the mountains.
1. Discounts on gear
Flashing your BMC membership card will get you discounts of up to 20% at more than 800 outdoor shops and online retailers. We’ve even got a handy new map search facility to make finding participating stores near you even easier.
You’ll also receive 10% off the RRP in the BMC online shop, with its wide selection of maps, guidebooks and mountain literature.
2. Subsidised courses
Keen to build your climbing or hill skills but can’t afford an expensive course? We run subsidised courses in partnership with Plas y Brenin that will help you out with everything from climbing outdoors for the first time to improving your scrambling know-how. You can also learn how to use an ice axe and crampons with aplomb on our winter skills courses.
For those who want to improve their moves locally, our Rock Out courses run out of climbing walls around the country and are designed to give keen would-be climbers their first experience of climbing on rock - at a hefty discount, of course.
3. Expedition funding
At the other end of the scale from our subsidised skills courses are our expedition grants. If you’re a BMC in member with a glowing record in the process of planning a significant international expedition then you may well be eligible for grant support. We’re particularly keen to fund younger mountaineers, who might not be able to attempt their trip without a grant. We also support the ambitions of young female mountaineers and disabled British climbers through the Julie Tullis Memorial Award.
4. Money off travel and accommodation
Whether you’re planning a climbing trip within the UK or branching out abroad, we can help bring down your costs. BMC members receive travel discounts on a wide range of travel companies, as well as money off airport parking and car hire. We’ve also teamed up with a number of accommodation providers - including Best Western and Cottages4You - to give members 10% off asking price. Finally, why not take advantage of our club huts to bring down the cost of your trip?
5. Club perks
Joining a BMC-affiliated university club can open up even more money-saving opportunities.
“Clubs can generally negotiate a larger discount with a local retailer and negotiate discounts on climbing wall entry for their members,” explains BMC project coordinator Suzanne Jones. “You will also have access to shared kit, you can learn from more experienced club members rather than paying for instruction, and you can go on organised activity trips and holidays to keep costs down. Some clubs also have their own huts in climbing areas, saving on accommodation.”
The BMC currently has more than 70 affiliated university clubs and societies, and this year we secured £21,000 of funding from Sport England to help clubs purchase equipment, employ professional instructors and develop websites and newsletters.
We want to say a big thanks to every BMC member who continues to support us through the Coronavirus crisis.
From weekly Facebook Lives and GB Climbing home training videos, to our access team working to re-open the crags and fight for your mountain access, we couldn’t do it without you.
