The BMC is joining the Ramblers and thousands of others across the country to become path protectors. Together, we are calling on the government to ensure our paths are protected for generations to come.
Our countryside paths are one of Britain’s most precious assets and as such, the BMC is supporting the Ramblers' campaign, Your Path Awaits. Hidden in plain sight, they allow all of us to access and enjoy the countryside. Whether you're a walker, climber or nature lover, there is a path awaiting you but keeping them in good condition requires hard work and investment.
As we prepare to leave the EU, the government is developing a new set of rules for how the countryside will be managed long into the future, as part of the Agriculture Bill. It is vital that these rules protect our ability – and the ability of future generations – to access and enjoy the countryside.
Across the UK, path protectors including farmers, Ramblers’ volunteers and walkers play a vital role in keeping paths open, maintaining gates and bridges and preventing our paths from becoming blocked or overgrown.
But they need your help and the support of government to ensure our paths are protected for generations to come. The path network is one of our most valued assets and it needs your help.
We are joining Ramblers to protect our paths and ensure we can all get out into the countryside for years to come. You can help by becoming a path protector and by writing to your MP today, and join us in calling for an Agriculture Bill that protects and enhances public rights of way, keeping our countryside accessible for future generations. BMC support letter to the PM to secure public access as a public good
The BMC has recently joined forces with 55 other environmental organisations, including the National Trust, the Campaign for National Parks and the RSPB, to sign an open letter to the Prime Minister. The letter outlines widespread support for a public goods approach to future farm payments ahead of the publication of the Agriculture Bill this autumn.
The letter welcomed the Government’s commitment to develop new farming and land management policies ahead of leaving the EU that provide ‘public funds in return for public goods, such as biodiversity, animal welfare and public access....such ambition is good for the public, fair to the taxpayer and, most importantly, critical to bolstering farming’s resilience…’
