The BMC Gallery of Mountaineering was officially launched at Kendal Mountain Festival in November 2016. Find out more about the gallery and view images online.
What is the Gallery of Mountaineering?
The Gallery http://bmc.photoshelter.com/ is a digital record of images going back over the past 100 years portraying the personalities and events which have moulded this great activity and allowed it to become the multifaceted sport that it is today.
Who can view it?
Everyone and anybody will be able to access the Gallery. You don’t have to be a member of the BMC though it will be accessed through the BMC website. All images will be fully captioned and copyright marked and be fully searchable. This Gallery will be a great tool for all, whether a casual observer or a mountaineering history fanatic.
Who can contribute?
This Gallery will not be a fully-fledged archive from day one. It is a dynamic site and what is news today will be tomorrow’s history; therefore it will be a constantly and organically growing archive.
Initially we will be displaying images from a selection of sources; from our Clubs, from individuals, from great archives. We have started off by asking a few sources to contribute a few images to populate it for this launch.
As it develops we hope that this Gallery will become the ‘come-to’ location for all historic mountaineering images.
What should we do?
You are the people who will make this Gallery work, especially as there have been so many wonderful climbing shots taken over the past century. These photographs are our record of how the sport developed. We must preserve that history, and we can do it if everyone contributes to this Gallery.
How do we do it?
Many climbers, Clubs and photographers likely have images of: historical climbing pictures, portraits of climbing pioneers and modern superstars, the early history of Clubs and their activities, first or early ascents, or climbs in the UK, the Alps and the Himalaya – all will be welcome in this Gallery.
Images will need to be digitised and captioned by you to ensure all the information is correct.
