Grab a brew, put your feet up and snuggle into that down jacket, here's the BMC’s favourite five hidden gems of this year’s Kendal Mountain Festival film programme.

At the heart of Kendal Mountain Festival is its film programme and what a line-up there is this year! From international blockbusters Free Solo and The Dawn Wall to submissions from filmmakers less well known, we have had a sneak peek at the programme ahead of the release of this year’s trailer this Monday and here are our favourite five festival flicks.

This Mountain Life

Martina and her 60-year-old mother Tania embark on a 6 month, 2300 km journey to Alaska through a relentless mountain wilderness; an opportunity to adventure into the true uninhabited corners of the earth.  A journey which is bursting with so many faces with great stories to tell.

Spectre

Leo Holding will present his film ‘Spectre’, in which he embarks on a journey in Antarctica which lasts fifty-seven days, covers 1,700km and visits 31 camps.  The end result is that he successfully climbed one of the most remote mountains on the planet, the Spectre, and completing a completed a trans-continental traverse utilising traditional sled-hauling techniques and modern snow-kiting technology.  Get your tickets here for what is set to be an incredible hour and a half on entertainment.

Inis Mor – On The Edge

Steve McClure and Ricky Bell check out some amazing steep lines on Inis Mor, off the west coast of Ireland.  A short watch but might be the spark to inspire a trip!

Statement of Youth

This film turns back the clock and looks at climbing in the 80’s.  Featuring legends of the scene Ben Moon and Jerry Moffat, Statement of Youth considers the exponential increase in climbing standards within the space of one decade, and is narrated by those at the forefront of this progression. View the trailer here.

All Tooled Up

The Wide Boyz take on ice climbing!  A change from their usual scene, the notorious Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker head to Ben Nevis to tackle some of the routes on offer during Scottish winter.

24/8

In 24 hours, Dave McLeod attempted to climb an 8A boulder problem, an 8a sport route, an E8 trad route, a winter route graded VIII 8, plus eight Munros.  Crazy hey?! Be sure to check out the film and the man himself who fronts a special screening on the Sunday of the festival for an insight into this ridiculous challenge.  Buy your tickets here.

There are plenty of interesting watches in this year’s film programme, check out the full selection here and don’t forget to head to the Oscars of outdoor film with Kendal Mountain Festival’s Film Awards on Saturday night, this year hosted by comedian and outdoor enthusiast Ed Byrne.

Be sure to book your tickets quick: events are likely to sell out.
